LootRun Primer

t's likely that everyone reading this guide is starting from a different point.  Maybe you have a level 50ish character in a guild.  Maybe you just started EQ2.  Maybe you just started a Fae and you need some money to equip her.  No matter... in all circumstances I recommend you start a new character to be used exclusively for LootRunning.  Your brand new character can start from scratch, without any help from other characters and be earning platinum in a few short hours (5ish).

Why start a new character?  Grouping or joining a guild can hurt your LootRunning.  For the most part you will be doing loot runs that last 30-45 minutes (repeatable if you like).  So you can log on your LootRunner, do a run - then bring on your main to play with friends and guildmates.  This allows you to give generously to friends and group members since you already have the platinum you need to buy the best gear.  If you use a guilded character on your loot runs then the entire guild will see your looted legendary and fabled items -- they may start begging for these items (in some cases demanding them!), they are likely to ask to join you - slowing you down, or you may just get branded as a "Loot Whore".  It's best to earn your platinum in peace without social entanglements.

Isn't it expensive to equip a character to kill named mobs?  It can be...  The higher your level, the better your gear has to be to kill named mobs.  However, if you take my advice and start from scratch... it's dirt cheap.  A level 12 character equipped in mostly handcrafted can easily earn a few platinum everyday in Qeynos or Freeport.  I recommend when you start out that you sell 'Treasured' and buy 'Handcrafted'.  Splurge on the key pieces.  For instance a melee class should have an Imbued (possibly Mastercrafted) chest and weapons.  Be sure to contact outfitters and scholars directly for the best deals.  Buy or harvest your own rares, ask crafters that are working that tier anyway, and great gear is very inexpensive.  My most recent Fae LootRunner cost my main character a total of zero to equip at level 12.  She earned nearly 1 platinum by selling treasured items she looted before hitting level 12.  At 12 she was able to buy the rares for a full set of Mastercrafted Jewelry, a Handcrafted set of armor, and Adept III's of the important spells.  I don't recommend buying anything before level 10, the first 9 levels fly by without good gear.  *You should negotiate with crafters from your main character and mail items to your LootRunner.
The key here:  sell 'Treasured" and then hire crafters to make your gear.  Keep in mind that even low level 'Treasured' gear and adepts are selling for 4-6 gold on most servers.  This means that if you loot 20 such items on the way to level 11, you have earned about 1 platinum.
Are all named mobs equally difficult?  No, they all vary in difficulty.  You'll find that the early tier zones, such as those in Qeynos and Freeport have a variety of named mobs that are solo, or very easy group mobs.  This changes in the later tiers when nearly all named mobs are ^^^ group mobs.  If you are following the guides for Qeynos and/or Freeport, you'll notice that it's mentioned when a mob is a difficult ^^^ group mob.  The later guides only mention if the mob is easier than ^^^.  You may also notice the occasional non-aggro named mob.  Take full advantage of this to walk up to them and prepare for your fight.

How do I sell the loot?  Very good question!  There is only one right way to sell the loot, and that is by placing the loot in boxes in your room.  Do not sell your loot in channels (you're likely to get flamed, lied-to, and ripped off), do not sell to guildmates, just list it for a fair market price on the broker.  Do not underprice - charge what the market will bear.  Do not overprice - you need to make room for the future loot runs.  Buy a couple Strong Boxes or Salesman's Crates and stick them in the spots you access from your Market Board.  Learn to use the search tools to figure out proper pricing.  If you are selling an item that is not already priced on the Broker, then always assume it is an item 'In-Demand' and price accordingly.  You'll be looting a lot of the same items, so keep track of which ones sell fastest - you may want to bump up the prices on the hottest sellers.  Tip:  Tier 1 and Tier 2 bracelets are hard to come by, these items always sell at premium prices.

What class should I choose?  It's up to you.  I am sure they all have the potential to kill named mobs.  There are 24 classes, I do not have experience with most of them.  Here are some qualities that can make LootRunning faster and more enjoyable:

The ability to bypass trash mobs.  You don't want to have to kill every mob on the way to the named mobs.  Invisibility works great for this.  So does Feign Death Flopping -- just run a train of mobs right to the named, then FD at it's feet.  Additionally you can sometimes accomplish this goal by leveling to the perfect level - grey out the trash and keep the named mobs green.  Any class can use Totems of the Chameleon to become invisible...but you can't use them until level 30.

The ability to fight in close quarters.  Sneaking up to the named mob and killing them won't work very smoothly if you need a lot of space to fight - which would attract adds.  Some scouts, priests, and mages need room to work.

The ability to heal.  Non-healing classes do not leave a lot of room for error.

The ability to kill quickly.  LootRunning is faster and easier when your character can deal substantial DPS.

The ability to move quickly in in-door zones.  Classes that cast Spirit of the Wolf or Path Finding are wonderful.  However, you can just buy Totems of the Wolf, which are usable at level 15.

The ability to track.  Seeing which Named Mob is up is very useful, saves a great deal of time.

The ability to escape.  Escape can get you across zones or out of trouble fast.

Here are some of the classes I would recommend:  Bruiser, Monk, Necromancer, and Conjurer.  Each does decent DPS, has some sort of healing, and has a way of bypassing the trash mobs.  But feel free to choose any class you like and give it a try.

What if I have 2 computers?  If you 2-box or play with your significant other - then choose a combo that addresses the above qualities as much as possible.  Note:  2-boxing adds very little efficiency to Tier 1 and Tier 2 loot runs --> after that it becomes very beneficial.

What level should I get to?  You can start LootRunning as early as 7ish on the newbie Isle (Greater Fay is not so good).  However, I recommend you plan to hit at least level 11 and equip with handcrafted armor - jewelry - spells.  From there you can turn off experience and experiment with what you are capable of killing.  You can likely hunt named mobs from level 7 to 11 (6 is grey to a level 11 character).  If you want to kill tougher mobs you will probably need to hit level 12 and equip in Mastercrafted gear, level 8 will be the lowest green conning mobs.  Here is a chart to show you when you out-level the mobs:

What tools do I need for LootRunning?  Totem of the Wolf (level 15+), Totem of the Chameleon (level 30+), high quality food/drink, Essence of Health potion (all levels), and highly recommended the Noxious Remedy (all levels) potions to counteract disease traps from Exquisite Chests.  Additionally it is highly recommended that you get the free Map Updater download here:  EQ2Interface

Everyone seems to recommend questing for loot, why don't you?  Because questing blows.  Sure it can be fun and it's a good way to earn achievement experience...but for making platinum, it...well, it blows.  Most of my guides will show you how to earn a platinum or 2 in under an hour -- earning platinum by questing takes days.

Don't you get better loot by grouping?  Yes you do.  But chances you will win it are slimmer.  Plus... You are are likely to see less loot when you group.  Moving more than 1 or 2 people through a dungeon or zones to kill names can become a serious PITA and sssloooow.  There are exceptions:  At the highest levels grouping is almost essential.  With a well-honed team of players that often group together for the purpose of grabbing loot, things can get done.

What about the higher tier zones?  Give me time.  The guides take longer than you would think to put together.  I am working my way up from the lowest tiers.  Keep in mind that the lower Tiers:  1, 2, 3, and 4 offer some of the best loot runs in the game.  The higher tiers take longer to navigate, and the loot is sporatic.  You can score the rare 30 platinum piece, but it takes luck and often a week or two of loot runs.  The lower tiers typically pay out over a platinum worth of gear per hour.... that's a conservative number for me.

What do I do if I can't quite kill the named I really want to kill?  Typically the answer is buy better gear.  Upgrade to masters in key combat abilities/spells, get better armor/weapons.  However, tactics can play a big part.  Try stunning early, try saving the stun until just before you use a heal, try debuffing with a hex doll, try buying some potions that add a little damage...a heal... etc.  If you have to, level up.

What if groups of people are killing my named mobs?  Let them.  Go play your main for a while.  Or start another loot runner for a different zone/loot run.  Don't argue with people, don't run past groups working towards a named mob - be nice, be considerate of others, even be generous about it - don't be an asshat.  Remember how hard it was to earn loot before you started loot running?  Give these poor groups a break and let them have their fun.  Being nice doesn't mean making friends -- remember that being free of social entanglements helps you earn plat faster.

Wouldn't it be easier to mentor down my high level character?  Yes, it would.  However, farming the early zones solo with your mentored character is really exploiting the mentoring feature.  If you plan to become a LootRunner, create level appropriate characters please.  The exception is if you want to earn achievement experience FAST -- just mentor down and pick off the named mobs in Tier 2+ zones.  These guides are very useful for gaining achievement.
